Throughout the year you can feel the air of expectancy building in these communities - it is almost palpable - leading up to one of the many events, distinctly rural, that are celebrated by locals and visitors alike.

Take for example Duck Shooting opening day, always the first weekend in May with the season running  to July (the last date varies) or the Whitebait Running from the sea to upper reaches of local rivers and streams from 15 August to 30 November inclusive ( best netting spots are kept very secret.)

Add to the mix many fishing competitions from Wanganui to Patea, Annual Targa Car Rally, A&P Shows  (Waverley always hold it's A&P Show on the Tuesday following Wanganui), Rhododendron Festival, Taranaki Fringe Garden Festival, Womad, Paepae in the Park at Patea, Taranaki Dog Trials, Border Rugby, The Hunt, Waverley Races, Golf and more.  You can set your calendar to a beat that will keep you extremely busy throughout the year and throroughly entertained without setting a foot outside of the area.

But if you need a change of scenery, that too is just a breeze along a major arterial highway, SH3,  to either New Plymouth and beyond in the north,  Wellington in the south or the ski fields which are just a couple of hours drive away.
